NEW HEBRIDES PROBLEM.

STATEMENT OF FRENCH VIEW. London, Sept. 8. A message from Paris states that the question of the Australian annexation of the New Hebrides has been discussed, in the newspaper L’Homme Libre, with which M. Clemenceau was associated for many years. The journal bases its views on a request alleged to have been made to the British Government by Mr, Hughes to make official proposals to France with a view to annexation.

The newspaper says: —“Assuming that the inhabitants of the New Hebrides, who have proved their attachment to France, consent to accept an Australian protectorate, what advantages would the British Government offer us in exchangOf for these islands, which are capable of

great economic development? “In any case,” the journal adds, “there can be no question of contem-i plating the cession of French rights ins the islands in exchwigo for the rcmis-. sion of portion of our War debt.”
