WAITARA.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Sept. 17. The Borough Council met on Wednesday last. Present; The Mayotj Crs. Ogle, Blair, Jones, Johns, Johnston. HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER. The Mayor stated that he had attended the preliminary meeting of the Taranaki Electric Power League, held in Eltham on the 23rd instant. The local bodies concerned were asked to contribute pro rata towards the preliminary expenses which would be entailed by engaging experts to examine a suitable source in Taranaki for supply. All those present had committed themselves towards the cost, excepting himself and one other representative.
Cr. Ogle was afraid that with a provincial scheme there would be friction in respect to the cost of current. For instance, if generation was near Eltham it might be contended that they were entitled to a cheaper current than, say, Waitara. There should be some definite understanding in this matter before the council committed itself. The Mayor said that the expenses of the experts had to be met somehow, and if Waitara wanted to receive the benefit of the scheme it would certainly have to pay towards the cost. Cr. Jones thought the council was entitled to know what the preliminary expenses were going to be. He moved that, provided all parts of the district are to receive current at a uniform price, the borough is willing to subsidise the preliminary expenses pro rat a.-r—Seconded by Cr. Ogle and carried. HAWKING OF MEAT. Messrs. Fletcher and Reynolds, the local retail butchers, wrote asking for a by-law to be instituted to prohibit the hawking of meat from door to door. This was in view of the special precautionary measures required as sellers of perishable goods, and the expense entailed in maintaining a proper standard. • The Mayor asked if it was thought a hawking cart was about to start, to which the reply was, “No, but by the present outlook the price of meat was going to drop, and it would be an incentive to farmers or anyone to unload their stock per medium of a retail hawking cart.” It was decided that a by-law be introduced to prohibit the hawking of meat in the borough. ELECTRIC LIGHT LOAN. Regarding the Bank of New Zealand’s request to be relieved of its borough loan of £BOOO, the superintendent of the State Advances Office, in reply to a letter from the council, said the question of permitting the payment of 7 per cent, interest would be gone into on receipt of information as to what rate the poll sanctioned. No action was taken pending a reply from the State Advances Office. GENERAL. Cr. Jones said he was requested by Cr. Jaggs to bring up the matter of indiscriminate tipping of rubbish on the east side of the river towards the beach.—lt was resolved that the overseer inspect the neighborhood and warn carriers. Cr. Johns brought up the matter of compulsory proficiency certificates for motor drivers, and thought that when the bylaws are being gone into the same should be instituted.—No action was taken. R.S.A. At the monthly meeting of the Waitara branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association the secretary was instructed to arrange a re-union of ex-soldiers to take place on Monday, September 26. Mr. Brabant was appointed the delegate at the conference to be held al Hawera at which Taranaki members of Parliament will be present, to discuss the soldiers’ pension schedule. GENERAL. The Soldiers’ and Civilians’ Club are to be complimented on instituting a special night once a week to popularise the club. On Monday evening next the question, “Is Marriage a Success?” will be'debated, the affirmation being taken by Mr. C. H. Tate and the negative by Mr. Southwell, who are both single men. I am sorry to have to report the death of Mr. S. Wyllie, which took place on Saturday morning. Much sympathy will be extended to his wife and family. Mr. Wyllie has been in indifferent health for a long time. He was much respected, and always attained a high standard at the local school, of which he was headmaster.
