AUSTRALIAN RACING. By Telegraph.—Pre«« Assn.—Copyright. Sydeny, Sept. 16. Duo, Big Chief, Kick-Off, Hula Girl and Athens have been scratched for all Jockey Club engagements. NOTES BY “MOTUROA.” The Referee Turf Record, a monthly publication giving particulars of ’Stralian racing, has made its appearance, and should be useful for those wishing to keep themselves abreast of the times as regards racing on the other side. The first volume covers the month of July, and its belated appearance is of little use, while its index is all jumbled up. Amongst the illustrations are first class photos of Gloaming, Eurythmic, Furious, David and Poitvel, and the jockey’s gallery includes our own “Lil’ ’Ector.” The Turf Record is not likely to set the country on fire!
Rational does not appear to be the stone certainty for the Avondale Flying that the charts would have us believe. He did not have much on Simonides at New Plymouth, and you would hardly pick the latter to be’dangerous in such a field. Tn the opinion of many, Rational is too finch’ drawn to stand a proper winding-up for early spring racing.
Dowin in Wanganui last Saturday they talked nothing but Malingerer for the Farewell at Marton, but it was the /same old tale, and when the Hack gelding was beaten into . third place a big army of punters said farewell to. their week’s earnings. What a fine show the Wanganui prad had of conceding 6 lbs to a brilliant colt like Tolerance over seven furlongs!
Some uniformity is required in compiling “correct cards” of the races, as perusal of recently published programmes amply show. Thus we see Panache described as a three-year-old “horse”; Humbug a four-year-old “colt”; Left a three-year-old “mare”, and Sunbath a four-year-old “filly.” It is many years since the writer struck an aged “filly” or a “se^en-year-old” gelding, but nevertheless racing club secretaries
are not nearly as exact in the use of correct nomenclature as they shoud be. Cabled from Sydney that Trainer Donovan, having taken umbrage at the Randwick Stooards’ objections to the manner in which Duo’s understandings were bandaged, has completed arrangements for returning in New Zealand with his team of horses. All of which is puerile, and reflects little credit on Donovan. Everybody knows that -the stewards have a perfect right, in New Zealand as elsewhere, to see that a horse is—in their opinion—properly bandaged, if bandaged at all, and may require the leg-encasements to be stitched on inistead of merely being tied. The dangers of a loose or trailing bandage is a race cannot be too heavily stressed, and those who stand for safety in racing will uphold the Stooards’ action. The race won by the New Zealander Cupidon, at Tattersall’s meeting at Randwick on Saturday was the Novice Handicap, one mile, and Mr. Greenwood’s prad was weighted at 8.8. The only other New, Zealander weighted was Lora Martian, who had 8.2. Cupidon was tipped by the majority of Sydney writers, and is sure to have started at a short “price.”
Details of Eurythmic’s win in the Memsie Stakes, 9 -furlongs, at Caulfieldon the 3rd inst., show that the champion waited on his field until well in the straight, where his position appeared hopeless, hut. coming with a magnificent run from the distance he cut down the lightweights, Demetrius and Harvest King, to whom he was giving away 37 and 30 pounds respectively, and won with his head on his neck (so to speak) in easy fashion. Needless to say the Horsestralian idol received a flattering reception on returning to scale. Eurythmic appears to be as good as ever he was, and has only been defeated once (when ho finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup) in twenty starts. Now he is after Carbine’s stake-winning record, and it, looks guineas to gooseberries that he will eclipse it this season. The Sydney Bulletin is a solid barracker for the totalisator, and never missed a chance to strengthen its argument. Referring to the recent Adelaide meeting the Bulletin quotes the splendid second dividends paid out, viz., £3 18s, ,£l7 10s. and £2O Is—a matter of .£37 9s for three tickets on runners-up. A punter, risking a pound on each of those three seconds with a fine, openhanded Ikey who lays short odds with a “concession” would have got—his money back! No wonder Ikey’s bedtime prayer is “God bless all kind wowsers who oppose the totalisator!”
