TO-DAY’S MATCH. TARANAKI v. OTAGO. THE TEAMS. It is very many years since an Otago team has paid a visit to New Plymouth, and consequently more than usual in- ■ terest is being evinced in the visit of! the redoubtable southerners. Their last visit to Taranaki was in 1912, when they met and defeated Taranaki at Ha wera by 18 points to 11. A feature of the game was the goal-kieking on each side. Coekroft contributed 12 points to Otago’s score by penalty kicks, whilst Stahr added 8 to Taranaki’s ; total by notching two penalties and converting a try. This year’s Otago, team is a strong one and greatly impressed critics by its work at practice yesterday. The Taranaki team also is stronger than that which met Auckland, especially in defence, where they failed badly last week. The forwards, though they did well against the northerners, should do better to-day, as the inclusion of Masters and Ki veil will undoubtedly strengthen them. Wilkinson, who was injured in Auckland, will not be able to play and will be reploc- ‘ ed by Coutts, whilst Hart and McCullough will be included emergencies. The teams are as follows:TARANAKI. Full-back: Lusk. Three-quarters: Hickey, Hooker, Robertson. Five-eighths: R. Oliver, Coutts. Half: Berg. Wing-forward: Malone. Forwards: Campbell, Whittington, Allen, Masters, Kivell, Fry day, Birchall. Emergencies: Back, Hart; forward, McCullough. OTAGO. Full-back: E. Watson. Three-quarters: Ward, Perry, Owles. Five-eighths: Hawke, Thomas. Half: McNaughton. Wing-forward: Wilson. Forwards: Boyd, Highley, Knox, Sonntag, Patterson, Davidson (captain), Boreham. The game, which will start at 2 p.m., will be controlled by Mr. F. Julian. Taranaki and Otago have met on seven previous occasions; each side has ' won three matches, and the other was , I drawn. Taranaki has scored 73 points, ; while Otago’s aggregate is 56.
THIRD GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP. Great interest centres in the thirdgrade championship, which will be played as a curtain-raiser. The Stratford team is said to be a very strong combination, and as the school will be represented by the same fifteen that performed so creditably in the Moascar Cup fixtures, a good and bright exhibition should be witnessed.' RULES OF THE GAME. THE CONFERENCE OPENED. *| MR. McLEOD PRESIDES. 9 By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.
