A young man was driving into Stratford in a gig and had with him a lady with a baby, when the horse stumbled, and the occupants of the vehicle were thrown on to the road. The driver was thrown clear of the gig, but the mother was thrown over the splash-board and wedged between the horse and the gig. whilst she managed to drop the baby on to the road. Had the horse struggled or tried to gallop on the lady must surely have been badly injured, and the baby might possibly have been run over. Fortunately the horse stood still, and excepting lor a few bruises nobody was hurt. CATTLE BREEDERS. A meeting of representatives of the Stratford branch of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association and the Taranaki branch of the Friesian Breeders’ Association was held on Monday evening to discuss with Mr. Singleton (director of the dairy division), the change in semi-official testing from a two days’ to a one day’s sample of milk.
The chairman (Mr. Ranford) that when word was received by him from the department of the proposed change, and being asked his opinion, he replied that he did not a favor a one day’s sample, and suggested that the department stay their hands until the opinion of testing breeders had been sought in the matter.
Mr. Singleton, in addressing the meeting. gave a short review of semi-official testing operations in'this country. Australia. and the United States. He pointed out that a one day’s sample had proved quite satisfactory in the States; the department had been forced to adopt this method in view of the large number of fresh applications to have cows placed under test. They were faced with one or two alternatives, either to accept these applications and reduce the number of days for samples to be taken to one day, or carry on as at present and refuse any further applications; no other solution was apparent. To employ further testing officers was out of the question on account o-f the heavy expense involved, especially in' view of the retrenchment which was taking place in all Government departments. The department had given the matter very serious consideration, and had come to the conclusion that there was only one course for them to adopt, and that was to reduce the number of days to one and give all breeders an equal opportunity to have their cows placed under semi-official test. Opinions had been sought from testing, members of breed associations’ executives, and. although not preferring the new system, they were, with one or two exceptions, quite willing to fall in line and give an equal opportunity to all. He felt sure that breeders from the Stratford end would appreciate the difficulty the department were faced with, and would co-operate with them in making a success of the new arrangements. Mr. H. Marchant felt that they could not exclude new breeders, and would agree with the change in the hopes that when times improve the two days’ test would be reverted to. Other member!, spoke in a similar strain. Mr. Ranford moved: “That after hearing the explanation offered by Mr. Singleton re the circumstances leading to the change in the conditions governing the semi-official test, we endorse the action of the department and promise our hearty co-operation.” The resolution was carried unanimously. The question of breed associations conducting semi-official testing was also discussed at some length, the opinion being generally expressed that this step was not advisable, the Government being representative of and working for the good of all breeds, were the best fitted to conduct this kind of work. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Singleton, which was carried with acclamation.
