AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.

SITUATION BECOMES WORSE. A STATE OF ALARM. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 14, 1.20 a.m. Berlin, Sept. 12. Foreign Office telegrams show that the attitude of the Hungarian Government as regards the Burgenland dispute is very unsatisfactory. Hungary replied to the Allies’ Note suggesting that the work of restoring order shall be entrusted to Hungarian troops. This is regarded as irrelevant and the abandonment of the previous disavowal of responsibility for the action of irregular bands. The Austrians have withdrawn from their zone.

Meanwhile a state of alarm prevails on the frontier, and the populations and cattle are being driven inland. It is felt in London that it will be necessary to employ coercive measures to compel the fulfilment of Hungary’s obligations.
