GOLD-DREDGING.
OPERATIONS AT HOKITIKA. , AN AMERICAN COMPANY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hokitika, Last Night. The Rirnu Gold-Dredging Company’s leviathan dredge south of Hokitika is completed, and a trial was made to-day of the dredging plant worked by electric power from the Kanieri Lake. The whole plant worked exceedingly well, and small matters requiring adjustment are receiving attention. The operation of the machinery by electric power was a novelty in goldmining, several pew ideas in dredging being installed. Dredgemaster Lewis, of the United States, has operated similar large dredges in America. As an indication of the size of the dredge the gold-saving tables have a spread of 5000 square feet. The company was capitalised by New York shareholders. Their representatives are Messrs. Cranston and Ford, who, after thoroughly prospecting the ground, have great hopes for the success of the venture.
