OBITUARY.
MARQUIS OF MILFORD HAVEN. DIES SUDDENLY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright. London, Sept. 12. The death has occurred of the Marquis of Milford Haven, better known as Prince Louis of Battenburg. He was First Sea Lord at the Admiralty when war broke out, but subsequently resigned. Received September 12,. 8 p.m. London, Sept. 12.
No one was present When the Marquis of Milford Haven suddenly expired. His housekeeper, after attending him, returned and found him dead. His wife and younger daughter were staying at a London hotel preparatory to journeying ot Paris, and were summoned, but they arrived too late. Both his sons were absent serving on board warships.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
The Marquis of Milford Haven was 66. The eldest son of Prince Alexander of Hesse, he was born in Gratz (Austria), but became a naturalised British subject. He entered the British Navy in 1868, and served brilliantly, eventually becoming First Sea Lord. He was First Sea Lord from 1912 to 1914, when he resigned. In 1917 he relinquished, at the King’s request, his German titles, assumed, by Royal licence, the surname of Mountbatten, was created a peer, and in place of the title of Prince Louis of Battenburg became the first Marquis of Milford Haven. He married his cousin, Princess Victoria, daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and of Princess Alice, Queen Victoria’s daughter. Lord Mountbatten, the eldest son, served on H.M.S. New Zealand during its world tour, and on H.M.S. Renown during the visit of the Prince of Wales.
