RAVAGES OF THE HAWK.
DESTRUCTION OF PHEASANTS.
OATS ALSO A MENACE.
The ravages of the hawk are dealt with by a correspondent of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society in a recent letter to the secretary. The writer states:—
‘•Whereas at one time T used to think the alleged ravages of the hawk were exaggerated, I have, during the past few months, had the truth of the society’s conclusion brought home to me. Within the period of one week two hen pheas-
ants were destroyed by hawks on my property at Henderson. In each case the hawk was disturbed, and the bird found dead on the spot,’mutilated, but still warm. These are by no means the only cases I have come across of the hawk’s depredations, but they are the most, recent, having occurred in July last. I hope every sportsman will hear of, and take careful not of this, and do his best to help the society and its branches in every possible way to rid the country of the pest.
"Cats are probably almost as bad as hawks,” continues the writer, ‘‘and a hint in that direction may prove fruitful. A settler recently informed me that he had a eat with kittens, the nest of which was lined with pheasants’ feathers, significant and incriminating evidence of feline activities among our game.”
