The ■batting of the Auatralians was not convincing, and they finished the first innings 58 behind the Englishmen. Jupp was in great form, and took 5 wickets for 54. Collins, without adding to his overnight score, was stumped by Wood, and Jupp knocked out Macartney’s middle stump before he had broken the ice.— Two for 37. Wood missed a chance of stumping Andrews, off Woolley, before he got properly going. Runs then came steadily, and several bowling -ahanges were made. Andrews got in occasional good drives, and he and Bardsley carried the total to 116 before the latter got his leg in front of one of Hitch’s. Andrews was dismissed at 130 by a fine onehanded catch by Mead. Jupp disposed of Taylor and Armstrong in the same over. Six for 150. Eight runs later Ryder was caught at square-leg, three wickets falling in twelve minutes. Hendry, McDonald and Mailey provided some lively tail-end play, causing several quick bowling changes. The fielding was rather poor, aind the large number of extras depreciated the good bowling. Thornton’s Eleven, in the second innings, at the close of the day’s play, had lost 6 wickets for 119. he score was:—' THORNTON’S ELEVEN. Second Innings. Sandham was particularly aggressive, and made some fine strokes. Armstrong tried several changes before Mailey appeared und ended Sandham’s career with a catch off his own bowling..—-Two for 87. Hearne, at 22, was taken in the slips.—Three for 92. Mailey bagged the next three wickets for an additional filteen, Hendren being caught in the loxig field, Woolley at the leg boundary, and Hitch from a skier, all of them trying to force the pace. Six wickets were down for 107. Mead and Douglas.. with their eyes on the clock, took no chances, and played out time.
