BILLS OF LADING.
HAGUE FORM ADOPTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrigtt. London, Sept. 9. Mr. Ashbolt informed the Australian Press that the general adoption by the Hague Conference of a bill of lading as cabled on July 30 was practically assured. British, American and Continental delegates, including representatives of the principal British maritime, mercantile, banking and insurance interests, all recommended its adoption.
Mr. Ashbolt believes it will nullify the Imperial Committee’s report cabled on March 22. Shipping companies will probably be influenced by a desire to escape legislation which was threatened in several countries. The conference preferred voluntary action. Mr. Ashbolt is of opinion that the Hague recommendations are superior from the shippea’s’ point of view to the Australian Sea Carriage Act, although they would involve some important amendment of that Act to bring it into conformity with the Hague rules. —Aus.N.Z.
