On inquiry late last night it was stated that Mr. Newton King’s condition was improving, and that he had passed a quiet day and was comfortable. Mr. W. R. Russell has been appointed handicapper for the Stratford Racing Club, vice Mr. J. Henrys, resigned.
Mr. A. Bates, a well-known Canterbury footballer, and a member of the Linwood Club, died a few days ago from peritonitis. The Rev. W. Grigg, of Wanganui (president of the New Zealand Methodist conference) arrived in New Plymouth last night, and will assist -in the services at Whiteley Church to-morrow.
A recent number of the New Zealand Methodist Times contains a portrait of Mr. William Hanson, and the editor says “ho is not only the oldest Methodist local jiroacher in New Zealand, but probably in the whole of Australasia.” Mr. Hanson is in his ninety-seventh year, and lives in Grey Lynn, Auckland. The death is reported in the English papers of Miss Emily Davies, the founder of Girton College, Cambridge. Miss Daviee, who had reached her 92nd year, devoted most of her life to the furtherance of two closely-connected reforms intended tp elevate her sex—women’s suffrage and the higher education of women.
A London correspondent says:—At the medical graduation ceremony at Edinburgh University, the only New Zealander “capped” was Mr. James Baird Aitken, who graduated with honors. He belongs to Palmerston North. Dr. Aitken is at present taking up general practising in Edinburgh as-a preliminary to further study.
