DISTRICT NEWS.
T ARATA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On the 3rd inst. the final football match for the season between Piikelio and Tarata- took place.' Pukeho being defeated by 8 to nil. Pukeho was captained by Campbell, and Tarata by T. Clarke. Play had been arranged to start i at 2 o’clock, but. owing to the shareholders of the local factory holding I their annual meeting that day, play did not commence till 3 o’clock. Tarata won the toss and played with the sun behind them while Pukeho took the kick off. The commencement of the game saw Pukeho’s forwards forcing the ball to their goal, but Tarata was eventually relieved by a powerful kick sending the ball well down the field. The play was in the centre of the field for some time, until the the ball was passed to D. Paterson- who made a dashing rush and scored. He then mado a difficult pot . over the goal. In the second spell Tarata forced the ball toward’ their , goal, a hard struggle taking place at the line, until the ball wa- passed to H. Crowe who made a daring rush througl j the Pukeho’s and scored. D. Paterson ■ then attempted to pot the ball over the | goal, but failed. Mr. O. Boult, of Strat- : ford, kindly gave his services as referee, ' and Messrs. A' King and A. Smith acted ! as line umpires, all being cheered at the | close of the game. After being photo f graphed by a resident, the teams par- | I took of afternoon tea in. the Tarata Hall, provided by the ladies of Tarata and surrounding district, who were heartily cheered by the teams. Spectators were present from Tarata and all 1 surrounding districts in no small numbers, and there wort* also som present from Inglewood and Stratford. A meeting of the settlers’ ball committee was held in the Tarata Hall on August 15, Mr. D. Paterson presiding. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £1 12s 2d, to be devoted, I understand, to framing the mirror in the ladies dressing room. A euchre party and dance was held in the Tarata Hall on Friday. August 2d, Mr. Matheson secured the gentleman’s prize with ten games. Airs. Morrison and Miss Paterson tied with nine games, and in the play off the latter secured the ladies prize. Mr. C. Waite was the winner of the “booby” prize. Supper .was provided by the ladies and was 1 most welcomed by all present. After supper the hall was cleared for dancing, and Mr. Al. Martin as M.C. kept things moving very merrily. Messrs. J. Burgess and A. Elliott contributed the music. The proceeds were devoted to the funds of the hall committee. A euchre party and dance was held in the Pukeho school-room on the 2nd inst. The proceeds from the night’s entertainment were devoted to the funds of the school committee. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co. Ltd., conducted their usual monthly sale at their Tarata yards on Friday the 2nd mst. There was a good yarding of stock and a good sale resulted. Store wethers Ils Bd, small weaner heifers £1 Ils, weaner steers 9s, empty 2-year heifers £5 IGs, heifers calved £5, springing heifers, from £ll to £l5. The numerous farm implements and sundries advertised brought full market values.
