INGLEWOOD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) September 7. It is very satisfactory to record a distinct success for the social and dance held in the Inglewood Town Hall on Tuesday, 6th instant, in aid of the funds of the Inglewood Beautifying and Improvement Society. The social phase of the gathering, exclusive of the dancing, was well patronised. No less than eleven tables were engaged in the euchre contest, wherein the winners were Mrs. King for the ladies and Mr. Cottier for the gentlemen. The bridge competition, though not so numerously supported—bridge, as an ordinary pastime has not caught on here yet—was equally keenly fought out, Mrs. Winter and Mr. Partridge being declared the prize-winners. J. Smith (honorary secretary of the society) were the M.C.’s, while Mr. F. Boulton, of New Plymouth, provided the music. The floor was roomy enough for all who wished to dance, and there were sufficient couples to comfortably occupy the area. The supper, that central consideration, on which the : success of functions of this nature so large- [ ly depends, was provided by the ladies of the gathering, who each brought “a plate”, and was unanimously pronounced “very good”, which expression certainly applies to the quality of the tea. The lady responsible for the brewing of that welcome refreshment evidently “knows how”, z Towards the end of the evening Mr. J. Sutherland, as president of the society, thanked all present for the practical support they had given it by their presence. He explained the objects and hopes of its members, who gave their time for what they believed to be the general good, and specially thanked those ladies and gentlemen whose hard work, in sympathy with the movement, had made the function such a successful one. Good evidence of appreciation of the quality of the music and condition of the floor is provided by the fact that dancing was kept up with unflagging energy into the small hours of the morning. It is, further, pleasing to be able to state that the funds of the society • will benefit to a substantial though not
