THE NEW TARIFF.
COMMISSION’S REPORT READY. By Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. The Tariff Commission’s work has been completed. The new tariff, subject to its approval by Cabinet, is now ready for presentation to Parliament es soon as the house is ready to receive it. No information as to the proposals can be made public before the Bill is presented, as tbit might lead -to a rush of goods from bond in order to escape any higher duties. When the Bill is presented to Parliament it comes into operation at once, but should any of the duties be altered in the passage of the Bill through the House, importers are entitled to a refund of the extra amount which they have paid. No indication has yet been given even of the underlying principles which will be embodied in the tariff, beyond the statement of the Prime Minister that the tariff which he would wish to see adopted was an extension of the principle of Imperial preference. So far as is known at present, the Prime Minister will adhere to his original intention, and will himself take charge of the Bill in the House. Wellington, Last Night.
