A Sydney cable message announces the death of Richard Green, ex-champLn sculler, at the age of 85. A London cablegram says it is announced that Mr. Godfrey Houldewortu, of Dunedin, is engaged to Andrina, daughter of Lord Inverforth. Mrs. Ivo Symes, of Wanganui, has been engaged by , the New Plymouth Choral Society to sing the contralto solos in “The Ancient Mariner.”

Mr. A. L. McAllum has been appointed inspector for Taranaki for the Eagle, Star and British Dominions Insurance Co., Ltd. I

The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Express reports that Joseph Marr, Germany’s most famous tenor, died tragicalty at the Opera House. He fell dead when finishing the second act of “Aida.”

Mr. F. Swindells has been transferred from the Main Trunk to take charge of the Taranaki Health District, vice Mr. E. Kendall, who has retired from the service.

Says a London correspondent:—Mr Will Hutchens, of Hawera. New Zea’and, who is now a resident of Bromley, Kent, bias been leading the Weymouth Municipal Orchestra on a fourteen-week summer season engagement, after playing with the Kennington Pantomime for seven weeks. In addition, at “Ohu Chin Chow,” he has been deputy. This theatre orchestra, thirty-four in number, is the largest in London. Mr. Hutchens sang the tenor solos at Bromley Central Hall in “The Crucifixion.” He will sing also at Broadstairs.” Mrs. Sussana Jupp, widow of the late George Jupp, who passed away at her home, Tikorangi, on the 2nd inst., was one of t-he rapidly lessening band of Taranaki pioneers. With her fat'er, the late William Batten, and aix’ other members of the family, she arrived at New Plymouth direct from England on January 23, 1843, bj’ the shsp Essex, 392 tons, Captain Oakley, the voyage occupying four months and 20 days. Mrs. Jupp was born in the parish, of Tilbury, Hampshire. England, and was the youngest of a family of seven, all of whom predeceased her. Her father was, it is believed, the first to take up systematic bee farming in Taranaki. Mrs. Jupp settled with her husband on his military grant of 100 acres, at Tikorangi, about 1867 (Mr. Jupp being colorsergeant of the old No. 2 Company of the Taranaki Bushrangers) and she had resided there without a break ever since. James Lyle Mackay, first Baron Inchcape of Strathnaver, who is coming to New Zealand, is probably the greatest shipping magnate of the British Empire, is a Forfarshire man, having been b?rn at Arbroath in 1852. As a young man he went to India and commenced that career which has resulted in making him one of the financial giants of the day. During his long experience in the East he did a considerable amount of work for the Government, negotiating a trade agreement with China and serving on the Legislative Coueil of the Viceroy of India. He also served on a number of commissions on financial and industrial matters. Among numerous other activities he is a director ’of the Suez Canal Company. Lord Inchcape was raised to the peerage in 1911.
