INGLEWOOD COUNTY.
MONTHLY MEETING. 'W : • The Inglewood County Council met yesterday. Present: Crs. A. Corkill (chairman), J. M. Hair, R. Stuart, A. Cowley, J. Hunter, H. Jones, G. Capper, J. Simpson and W. Topping. The statement of finances showed that the total spent on main roads to date was £3605 Is 6d, leaving available £1174 18s (id. The sums which had been spent in the ridings were as follows, the balance available being given within parentheses:—North Riding, £294 7s 4d (£ll5 17s 7(1); South, £62 Is (£614 13s); East, £49 6s (£9B 13s 9d); West, £385 14s 7d (£249 6s 9d). ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report on the month’s work was submitted by the engineer (Mr. G. S. Whiteside):— Plant. —Up to August 31, 364 cubic yards of boulders were crushed at the Ngatoro river, Mountain Road. Most of this metal was used for maintenance purposes. After that, in accordance with the direction of the council, the machinery was brought in and stored in the county shed. Most of the casual hands were discharged, and the remainder were employed water-tabling and doing surface repair work, the fine dry weather being favorable for road work.
Truck Work.—Considerable metal lias been out of the Manganui pit and transported to Ratapiko, and to the Mountain roads, being dumped alongside the road in suitable heaps for future metal patching purposes. Also a quantity of metal for the same purpose on the Junction Road was obtained from Thomason’s quarry pit outside the borough. Makara Deviation.—This work is now' finished and the formation metalled, the metal being put on the road 12 feet wide and at the rate of 22 cubic yards to the chain, making a total of 265 dubic yards used. Kohete Road. —New stringers have been put under the old bridge in the Kohete Valley Road. It is now made safe for thoroughfare, and should be
good for a considerable time. Other improvements have also been effected. The council should obtain another motor truck and have the 1009 cubic yards of boulders at the Maketawa river for this purpose crushed without delay. This would enable the work of metalling this road to be resumed and completed as soon as the weather was suitable and the roads firm enough for the weight. Jonerete Pipes—The concrete pipes xnufactured at the works since last rport total: —30 twelve-inch, 25 eigh-aen-ineli, 6 twenty-four-inch, 5 thirtynch, and 2 thirty-six-inch diameter. LOAN MONEYS. The State Advances Office advised that the application for ten per cent, additional ( £230) for the purpose of completing the forming and metalling of Road and building an arch over the Kurapete stream had been granted. Notification was received from the State Advances Office that the Kohete Road loan of £lOOO had been placed to the council’s credit at the bank. The resident engineer (Mr. T. M. Ball) wrote stating that he was unable to recommend a subsidy for the Hursthouse Road, as the funds available for this year were so strongly limited that they would be absorbed in works in the county that w’ere considered more important. “NO SYMPATHY” VOTE. The president of the Paritutu Protection League, New Plymouth (Mr. R. C. Hughes) wrote urging that united action be taken by local bodies to open np the Mount Egmont quarry. Correspondence was also forwarded xegarding the league’s activities in connection with the preservation of Parituni. Cr. S’mpson moved that the council reply, stating they had no sympathy with the league’s ’airns. lie said that while he had a great deal of reverence for Paritutu he was of opinion that the best memorial of it would be the construction of a big harbor. The motion was seconded by Cr. Cowley and carried. GENERAL. It was reported that the Richmond Road loan petition was not yet complete, as a number of signatures were required. It w’as decided that the matter of completing these be left in the hands of Cr. Hunter, and that, provided the papers were in order by the 17th inst., plans and specifications for the work be prepared for consideration at next meeting.
An acknowledgment of the receipt of a war trophy (a German machine gun) was forwarded by Mr. E. R. Newall, secretary to the Tariki hall committee. He intimated that it was the intention to have the gun painted, mounted and housed in the hall. The. chairman of the Tariki hall committee (Mr. F. M. Standish) also wrote expressing thanks to the chairman for his efforts in having a gun allotted to that district. The general manager of the New Plymouth Borough Council (Mr. F. T. Bellringer) wrote inviting offers for 1200 cubic yards of boulders stacked near the junction of the Kaianai and Waiwakaiho rivers, Junction Road, which his council desired to dispose of. —The council decided that no action he taken. It was decided to call tenders for boulder contracts as follows:—1000 yards, File’s depot; 1000 yards, Junction Road east; 700 yards for East Riding from Riley’s pit; and 300 yards for delivery at Tarata.
Nine applications were received for the position of crusher gang foreman, and it was decided that it be offefed
to Mr. R. C. Gray, of Inglewood. ‘ Applications are to be called for the position of engineer at a salary of £450, and a sub-committee was set up to draft conditions of appointment.
