FIRES.
CARTERTON BLAZE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Carterton, bept. 6. A fire, at 1.45 this morning, broke out in Allan Weir’s mercery shop, which was completely gutted. The building was one of a block of four wooden shops owned by W. J. Lindop and occupied by J. W. Ellis (chemist), P. F. Evans (draper), Alex. Lindop (confectioner). Ellis and his family were sleeping on the premises, and had a narrow escape from suffocation. The flames took hold of the roof, but the brigade succeeded in staying the outbreak. Weir lost his whole stock and books. Ellis suffered severe damage from smoke and water. Neither of the other two shops was injured. Weir’s stock was insured for £1420 in the State office, Ellis’ stock for £BOO in the South British and his fittings for £350 in the State office. The building was insured for £llO9 in the State office. Both Weir and Ellis are losers, the latter’s losses being particularly heavy. Both are returned soldiers.
