The weather was fine and the wicket unchanged. The attendance was 4000 when the mutch was resumed. Fifty minutes sufficed to dispose of the
remaining Australian wickets. Armstrong and Oldfield, resuming their unfinished. innings, scored freely off’ Louden and Gilligan until, at eight for 438, Oldfield was smartly taken in the slips. McDonald went in the same over. Armstrong batted 250 minutes. He was missed at . 24. otherwise his innings was faultless and he did some fine driving. He hit one fiver and 31 fours. Louden’s last three wickets cost only two nxns. The Sob.th of England replied with 199, and, following on, made a poor start, having lost* two wickets for 15 runs when time was called.
i In the first innings Gregory was in i great trim, bowling his fastest. He bagged five wickets, and Mailey acI counted for three. Batting at the open- ’ ing was slow, smart fielding adding to | the batsmen's, difficulties. The first 1 three wickets fell for 50, then H. Ashton and Wilson brought the total to 7fi before they w’ere separated. A lively partnership between Ashton and Tate added 3G, in spite of several bowling changes. The century appeared in 82 minutes. Tate’s score included a sixer. The next two, Rolf and Gilligan, failed to stay, and seven wickets were down for 123. The play in the closing stages was the best of the day, Ashton, Parker and Louden all putting the wood on freely to the various bowlers. Ashton batted 145 minutes. This was a ehanceless innings, with a perfect and sound defence. The innings lasted 165 minutes* With only 20 minutes' to play, the second innings started, and Hardinge played McDonald’s first ball on to his wicket. Bowley went at 9.
