JERSEY BREEDERS.

SOUTH TARANAKI BRANCH. The annual general meeting of thei South Taranaki branch of the Jeraejj Breeders’ Association was held at wera on Saturday afternoon. Mr. R. Linn, president, was in the chair, aaq there were about thirty members praW eent. \ CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS. ' - In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman inter alia: We started the association on July 17, 1920, with a membership of about 40, and during the past twelvd months we have increased this to U2a

Of this number there were outstanding subscriptions at June 30 of £lO, some of which have been paid; members ard asked to keep their subscriptions paid up. Mr. Wood, M.R.C.VJS., of New Fly< mouth, gave a very interesting address* to members in October last, which was of considerable benefit, and greatly ap-4 predated by all those present. On April 7 Mr. H. E. B. Watson, of Christchurch, attended at my farm and gave a demonstration, at which over 300 people were present. The demonstration

was most successful in every way. Y<mn committee decided to hold a C.O.R. Stakes competition, with prize money amounting to £5OO, and the number 00 entries, 286, is, I believe, a record. B am sure that the Hawera C.O.R. Stakes* will bring together the best of the breedl in New Zealand, and the result will ba watched with great interest by all lev* era of the Jersey. On July 17 we held( our first pedigree sale, which was fairly* successful considering all things. In my? opinion it would be better to hold thw, sale later, and to confine same to heif-* ers. As an association we want tfeol public to attend these sales, and in thefl future it might be better that any aged? cows or herds should be sold indepenrtj ent of the association. From a Jereejs standpoint we have reason to be satis-j fled with the result of the first yeaiM operations. This branch was formed for the purpose of assisting youagl breeders, and it has been our endeawrl during the past year to carry this o«tj We have proved that it was necctaMUy: to form a branch in this district, an& the result has proved the necessity foij our branch. Some of the older breed* ers may not realise the difficulties than the younger breeders have to contend! with, and few realised the extent of thei popularity that the Jersey would reads in this country. Some of those wh«* have entered for the C.O.R. Stakes findf that they are likely to have difficulty in getting their entries tested owing toj the Government not having a sufficiaati number of testers. This is a matteri that concerns not only the Jersey! breeders, but the whole Breeders generally are asked by ths| Government to import and improve} their stock and increase production, and unless the Government back this up by} supplying the necessary number of test-4 ers, breeders are only wasting and not receiving the encouragement! from the Government to carry out theinj advice for increased production. Al* though we are passing through hard) times there is no doubt, in my that the dairying industry is helping to bring money into this country, ana there is no doubt that in the futuiW the Jersey will still hold its place as queen of all dairy cattle. Mr. S. J. Bennett considered the ba!«*| ance-sheet very satisfactory They started oil bedrock, but. were now in the happy position, after twelve* months only, of investing no less than a sum of £2OO in the bank. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr. R. J. Linn (re-plected);? vice-president, Mr. J. Pettigrew (reelected) ; general committee, Messrs. F. Hoskin, H. H. Buxton, H. Hodge, H. Wren and S. J. Bennett.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the Egmont A. and P. Association for the use of their rooms, and a donation of £5 was voted in appreciation of same.

It was unanimously decided to recognise the secretary’s services by increasing his remuneration from £26 to £4O, the vote to be retrospective.
