WELLINGTON v. N.S.W. THE WELLINGTON TEAM. By Talegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The following team has been selected to represent Wellington against New South Wales on Wednesday:—Burts : SiUdells, D. Algar, Ryan, Aitken, Markham, B. Algar; E. Roberts. Forwards: King, Hansen, W. Byan, Moffitt, Muir, Bruce, Parker, S. Shearer. Emergencies: Forwards, J. Shearer, De Clifton, Duncan. Backs: H. E, Nicholls and M. Nicholls.
THE THIRD TEST. PICKING THE TEAMS. '‘Having seen both Tests,” says a correspondent of the Wellington Post, "and many of the othe? matches, I am satisfied that New Zealand play has been well below international standard, whereas last Saturday the Springboks played well up to form, and ran the New Zealanders off their feet. Being an old Rugby player, and keen follower of the g.:me, I feel quite satisfied in making this statement, and. further, if the South Africans played our game in team formation, then it would hare been a cricket score piled up against New Zealand in the second Test.” The correspondent then picks two teams for tlie third Test, placing the Springboks in our formation:— * New Zealand: Full-back, Kingston; threequarters, Steele, Ifwerson, Ford; five-eighths, Markhaai, Tureia (Poverty Bay); half, Roberts (captain); wing, M’Lean; forwards, Standen, Kirkpatrick (Hawke’s Bay), Moffitt, Bellis, Fogarty, Turnbull, Whyte, or J. O'Brien (Marlborough). South Africa: Full-back, Gerhard Morkel; three-quarters. Zeller, Sendin* Clarkson; fiveeighths. Townsend, Meyer; half, J. P. Michau; wing. Kruger; forwards, Royle Merkel, Ellis, J. M. Michau, Walker, Mellish, Van Rooyen, Mostert. THOSE GATE RECEIPTS. Another correspondent, "J.M..” criticises the management strongly, and asked where is the inquiry promised by the chairman into the gate receipts at the Wellington-Springbok match The public wants to know. He compares attendance and gate receipts—Southland match at Invercargill, 10,000 attendance, takings £lsBo—and asks how it is that at Wellington the receipts were only £2300, whereas on the basis of a 20,000 gate they should have been, on the Southland figures, £3160. The prices were the same nt both places, and the attendance at Wellington, as a matter of fact, very much more than 20,000. The correspondent considers that recent eVents show an obvious desire on the part of the authorities to put money first and look on the players as cogs in a money-making mcchine. What the public requires from the N.Z.R.U. is more consideration for players and Press, and less pot-hunting.
The South African footballers consider Petersen (Canterbury - ), Dustin (Manawatu) and Cuppies (Rotorua) three Of the best forwards I they have <met on the tour. The last named is about 15 stone in weight, and fast. Incensed because their team had suffered defeat, angry football barrackers at a recent match on the Maniy (Sydney) Oval between Manly and Eastern Suburbs, picked out a Press representative, who is a returned soldier with an injured leg, for attack. The assailants were unaware of the identity of their victim. At the conclusion of the game tbe pressnum was making his way to the pavilion when he was set upon by half a dozen Manly barrackers. No reason was given for the unprovoked assault. After a severe handling he was rescued by onlookers and taken to the officers of the St. John Ambulance, who are always present at the Manly Oval. A nasty cut over the right eye was dressed, and the
