AUCKLAND DEFEAT WELLINGTON. BY 13 TO 11, - AN INTERESTING GAME. By Telejjraph-—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The match between Wellington and Auckland was played in good weather and before a large attendance. The ground was fast am! dry. Auckland had tie better of the first spell, the handling of the backs being far superior and showing better combination. The forwards were better in loose rushes, coming away in a body. In the scrums Wellington were superior in hooking, being really firstclass.
The first score came as the result of a weak kick by Brookes in his own twenty-five, allowing V. Badeley to obtain the ball on the bounce and score unopposed. The kick failed. Auckland continued to attack. Frocn a scramble C. .Badeley passed to Nicholes, who was tackled, but Arnold, coming up fast, scored, V. Badeley converting. The visitors attacked, until from half-way Ryan broke away, transferring to Jackson, who scored. The kick failed. Auckland scored as the resuit of a fine bit of play from near half-way. Earle transferred to the two Badeleys, Lucas, Grierson, and then Lucus handling the bull, Lucas scoring and V. Badeley converting. At halftime the scores stood: — Auckland *. 13 Wellington 3 Wellington improved in r.he second spell, and were mainly on tho attack. Shortly after resuming, from a long throw-in, Shearer passed to King, who, by a good run, scored, conI verting his own try. Wellington continued the attack, a free kick for obstruction on tte twenty-five being kicked by King. The remainder of the spell was very fast. The final result was:— Auckland 13 Wellington ' 11 OTAGO BEAT SOUTHLAND. BY 20 TO NIL. Dunedin, Last Night. The return match between Otago and jgouthland was played at Carisbrook to-day before an attendance of 5000. Tlie ground was In splendid order, with a cross wind blowing, which slightly favored Southland in the first half and Otago in the second. Tho first spell was fairly even, the forwards being well matched, but. Otago backs being slightly superior. The score at half-titme was: Otago 3, Southland 0. In the second spell Otago entirely outclassed the Shield holders, tries being scored by Stem, Fea and Richardson, while Patterson potted a goal. Two of tho tries were converted by Harty and Patterson respectively, and the gaime ended: Otago 20, Southland 0. L. Guinea (Christchurch) was referee. MOASCAR CUP. NORTH ISLAND FINAL. AUCKLAND ' LADS DEFEAT ST. PAT’S. Palmerston N„ Last Night. The North Island final in tte Moascar Cup was played on Saturday between Auckland Grammar School ami St. Patrick’s College (Wellington). Tho game was most exciting, being closely contested, the ultimate result being in doubt up to the last few minutes of play. On their merits the teams were evenly matched, but Grammar had the advantage of weight and height. In the final spell Gould (Grammar) scored an unconverted try under tho posts. After a brief forward struggle on the line Freeman brought Grammar’s score to six wilt a beautiful try from a passing rush, and the game ended:— Grammar School c St. Patrick’s College . y In the last, spell Kennedy, captain of St. Patrick’s, sustained a dislocation of the small bone in one leg. Dineen, also & St. Patrick’s player, broke a leg. THE BROWN SHIELD. AUC'K LAN Du DEFEATS WELLINGTON. Wellington, Last Night. Auckland, in the Association challenge for the Brown Shield, defeated Wellington (holders) by two goal's to nil. The match was played under perfect weather conditions. In the first half of the game Auckland had slightly the better of the play, two goals being obtained by Hooper. Wellington showed W better advantage in the second spell, but lacked tho visitors’ combination, many chances to score being missed by faulty passing. Wellington has held the shield for three years. There were no competitors during the war period. TARA TA (8) v. PUKEHO (0). On Saturday a friendly foolball match was played at Tarata between Pukeho and Taraia. Tarata won by two tries, and one converted to nil. THE THIRD TEST. PROPOSED SPECIAL TRAIN. Recently the Railway Department at Wellington advised the Taranaki Rugby Union that in the event of the cost of a train being guaranteed, a special (non-stop beyond Patea) would run to Wellington and return on, the occasion of the final test match between the Springboks and New Zealand on the 17th inst. The minimupi guarantee asked for was 100 In the interim the union has been endeavoring to secure more definite information, aiui on Saturday evening the chairman (Mr. J. McLeod) was advised-as follows by the New Zealand Rugby Union : ‘•Railways ask guaran-' tee 100 fares, rate and a quarter, pro]X>sod train; leaving Friday night, returning Saturday night." It is hoped to be able to announce to-morrow (morning exactly what both the first and second-class fares from the various towns in Taranaki are, after which those intending to make (he* trip will be asked to deposit, the amount of the fare at Messrs. McLeod and Slade’s (Now Plymouth), or with Mr. G. E. .Tago (Stratford), or Mr. J. Goodwin, of Goodwin, Davey and Co. (Hawera). Immediately 100 fares are in sight, the Taranaki Union will guarantee the train, and
is this has to be done before the end of ’he present week immediate application will be necessary. Quite a considerable number of Taranaki enthusiasts already hare reserved seats for the match, and while no further seats in the stand or chairs arc available, the Taranaki Rugby Union has in hand the matter of reserving space for at least 100 spectators at 5s each. If, and when these are secured, the union will decide the method of distribution. TARANAKI RUGBY UNION. A meeting of the management committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union will be held at Stratford on Wednesday night.
