NORTH TARANAKI HUNT. TO-DAY'S STEEPI.ECHASH MEETING. New Plymouth was well filled with visitors yesterday to attend the North Taranaki Hunt Club’s annual steeplechase meeting, which takes place at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s course to-day, tho first race starting at 11.30 a.m. There are splendid acceptances in each event, and good racing should be witnessed. The course is in splendid order, Mr. Blewman and his staff having spared no pains to have everything in readiness for the meeting. The steeplechase course is an admirable one. The field will circuit the main, course twice and cover the last five furlongs in the course proper. There will, of course, be a variety of jumps, the double brush being immediately in front of the stand, while an additional jump is being erected in tho straight itself. Mr. O'Connor will control the starting barrier. and Mr. J. R. L. Stanford will be the judge, whilst tho totalisator will be in charge of Mr. L. Rea. The public are . notified that there will be 10s windows at the “tote” outside, and every facility will be given inside patrons to get to the 10s machine. The Citizens Band will be in attendance. The officials have left no stone unturned to ensure the comfort and convenience of patrons. The catering is in tie hands of Mr, Woolier, whilst the tea kiosk is controlled by Mr. Findlay, of tho Hygienic, and the refreshment booth by Mr. E. Whittle.

The prices of admission are: To the course 2s. and to the lawn, gentlemen 7s 6d. and ladies 2s 6d, children under 12 2s 6d. It would be a convenience if the public could bring the correct charge to the gates. .Special attention is again drawn to the fact that excursion fares will be available from Hawera and intermediate stations. The ordinary 4.20 train from New Plymouth will be delayed until 5.36.

Tho handsome cup which goes to the winner of the North Taranaki Hunt Cup Handicap Steeplechas is .on view in the window of Mr. J. Bennett, jeweller, Devon Street.

First acceptances for the New Zealand Cup closed last evening. Alan McDonald is riding in great form over fences at present. Tirau went wrong at Hawera, and may not be a runner this afternoon. Kafour’s running in the Bracelet on Wednesday was disappointing, but that form is not correct. “Billy” Bowden was to have ridden Mr. Gaisford’s junipers this spring, but unfortunately he broke a shoulder when Gravitate fell witb him on Wednesday. Stetson looked well, and was paying a hatful when he went out to contest the Hunt Steeples at Hawera, but a bit of crowding at the double caused him to part company with S. Walls. .Stetson will race at Martou and at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting the following week. Anmy Service was unlucky to get “snowed in” at one part of the Bracelet at Hawera, otherwise he would have won. Punters will be all there in the Hunters’ Flat race today. Toddy got into a couple of fences in the j Maiden Steeples on Wednesday, and was un- ; lucky not to beat Delage. With the latter , out of the way Toddy will be “hot” in the; i Maiden at New Plymouth I. Onipoto added to his goed lift* of wiM bjr

gathering in the Egmont-Wanganui Cup, and the Frisco gelding has only to reproduce that form to keep the opposition busy in the North Taranaki Hunt Cup. His owner, Mr. J. Brice, is one of tho best sports on the coast, and a victory for his colors is always well received.

Of the hacks seen out at Hawera this week Awake and Ditchley were high-class, and each made no race of ita engagement. Both will be seen to advantage in better company this season.

For some time there has been a whisper about Country Life, but the sister to Perfect Day and Country Air slipped the public badly at Hawera, paying easily the best dividend of the day. The three winners mentioned above were bred by Mr. J. A. Goodson, and were sired by Guianforte (recently sold to go to ’Stralia), and were out of Country Picnic,

Te Maire was aa odds-on order In the Hunters' Hurdles ‘at Hawera, but his rider appeared to take Silver Paul a trifle too cheaply. Probably the Yankee Jack gelding will make amends to-day.

Scratchings may materially reduce the fields in tho open and hack flat races at New Plymouth, but if Rational. Mort Avis, Prodigal and Danger Zone go to the post they will be strongly supported in their respective races.

For some unaccountable reason Mark Time was sent out second favorite in tho Maiden Handicap at Hawera. As stated dozens of times in these columns, the handsome brother to Marqueteur is a colt not likely to “come goo<l" for some time. As anticipated, Mark Time was never in the picture. Included amongst the acceptors for the Marton spring meeting are the following New Zealand Cup horses: Rouen, Starland, Strategy, Admiral Codrington, Kilgour, Maiota, The Hawke, Affectation and Tame Fox. Needless to say, their presence, together with that of Amythas, will invest the gathering with considerable interest.

1 Mattock never looked better than he does at present, and Mr. Gaisford has hopes of landing the big steeples at Marton with him next week. Probably S. Walls will bo in the saddle. Those who saw Tinil.anga (Absurd —Formless) run at Dannevirkc have been saving upto have a punt on her at Marton. She is a beautiful filly, and races in the colors of the estate of the late .1. W. Dougla?. Luke Wilson (trainer) holds a high opinion of her. So far there appears to have been very 1 little wagering on the New Zealand Cup, but in Wellington Rouen is reported to bo greatly fancied. Hawke's Bay sports swear by I’ente. while in the south Foo Chow and Royal Stat have friends With tho appearance of first acceptances things will probably look up somewhat. The present financial stringency is affecting totalisator totals ail round, and it seems as if racing clubs are in for a bad time io the near future. Therefore, dubs should go Sieady, and stakes should not be raised above compulsory amounts. It is a good thing to see the country taking a pull In the spending line, and racing clubs should follow suit and practice economy also. Big Chief (Mountain King—Swallow) had tard luck in the first division of the Three-year-old Maiden Handicap, run at Canterbury Park (Aus.), on the 20th ult. After making a Slow getaway he met with a rough passage, and at the finish dashed up and beat all but Worrobil (Varco- —Aardai), who got home by b ill’ a length. Big Chief should make good on the other side. Early spring racing is just ns popular In the north as el.-.ewl erc. Wonderful nominations have been received for the Pakuranga Hunt Club’jT (meeting. The Sylvia Park Handicap has attracted 55 horses,.and the Chatham Handicap 50. With eight races on tho programme there is no possibility of division racing, and it remains to be seen how these big fields aro to be accommodated. In addition to the above 42 figure In the Jellicoe Handicap, :<9 in tke Auckland Handicap, and average fi* oi’ about a score in each of the hunters’ Ci»cnls. Amongst the entries for the Pakuranga Hunt meeting are: Volo, Stork, Mistian, Pure Laziness, Rational, income and Kafour.
