At the Bawra wool sales for merino, mostly Continental kinds, opening rates were fully maintained. At Urenui on August 22, a moderate yarding sold at present ruling rates throughout. A line of very choice yearling Jersey heifers bred by and sold on behalf of Mr.: W. J. Freeth realised the extra high figure of £l4. The tone of the dairy sale was bright throughout, especially for anything of any quality. Fat wethers 19s 9d, yearling steers I6s to 255, forward 2-year-old steers £4 12s, fat cows £5 10s to £6, store cows £2 5s to- £2 10s, empty cows £3 18s, empty heifers £4-2s 6d, yearling heifers £2 7s to £4 10s, Jersey do £6 2s 6d to £7 3s, extra choice quality do £l2 Is to £l4, springing heifers £lO 10s to £l4 10s, backward do £8 10s to £9 15s, dairy cows £8 15s to £ll, better quality do £l2 to £l6 10s, Jersey do £l7 IQs to £2O 10s.

At Stratford on 23rd inst., little of a good yarding remained unsold, full market values ruling throughout. Store cows 20s to £2 4s, fat do £5 17s 6d to £7 12s 6d, fat bullocks £5 Is, empty cows £3 12s Ud to £5 12s Gd, weaner heifers £2 to £3 Bs, choice do £4 to £4 15s, Jersey do £7 15s, empty heifers £3 17s Gd to £4, springing heifers £l5 to £24, backward sorts £8 to £lO, heifers calved £9 to £l3, springing cows £lO to £l4, better sorts £l5 to £l6 10s, Jersey do £lB to £2O 10s.

At Opunake on the same day we conducted a clearing sale on account of Mr. O. Cross, and report a good attendance, resulting in a satisfactory clearance. The cows, which were in rather low condition and many backward in calving, sold well, the tops making £2O up to £3O. Other quotations: Small 2-year Jersey heifers up to £ll, draught mare £3O 10s, hoggets Ils 3d. At Inglewood on 24th, a. full yarding of cattle was practically cleared, rates on the whole remained on a par with the last sale in these yards. We report a heavy yarding of dairy cattle, most of which sold. Sheep were in little demand at the hammer, but most of the yarding we eventual!}’ disposed of privately. Firm enquiry kept up throughout the sale, resulting in a good clearance. Dairy cattle showed a decided improvement in values, due to a certain extent to the entry on the whole consisting of very good quality cattle.
