THE PRICE OF BUTTER.

AN INCREASE OF TWOPENCE.

NEW PRICE LIKELY TO-DAY. With the lifting of the Government control of the export of butter and the price within the Dominion, which took effect as from Wednesday, an almost immediate rise of 2d per lb in the retail price may be expected. A leading New Plymouth grocer stated to a Daily News reporter last night that no rise would take place until old stocks were exhausted, but butter was a commodity that could not be held in large quantities and stocks in New Plymouth would probably be exhausted today. The price of butter may therefore be advanced to-day by 2d per lb. Decontrol of prices will mean that the Government subsidy of 2d per lb on butter sold for local consumption to bring local prices to a level with export prices, will have to be made up by the New Zealand consumers.
