DISTRICT NEWS.

WAI-TOI-TOI—URENUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday afternoon last, a very successful concert was given by the children attending tl:e Mimi school on the occasion of closing for the spring vacation; At the invitation of Miss Simpson (head teacher), a number of Indies were present, and expressed themselves as highly pleased at the manner in which the young ones acquitted themselves. Duets were rendered by- Miss Amy Phillips and Mildred Morris, and Edith Baker and Hazel Phillips; songs by Miss Mary Hutchens and the whole of the school children; recitations by Anthony Zimmerman, Jackie Burfitt, and Douglas Mercer. The teachers (Misses Simipson and Frost) are to be complimented upon the success of the performance, and future functions of a similar nature will be looked forward to with Interest. During the proceedings, afternoon 1 tea was dispensed, and needless to say, was much appreciated.

.Monday ■ last was quite a. red letter day amongst, the children in this locality, when some thirty of the pupils of the Mimi school were conveyed by Mr. Arthur Smith’s fine large bus to New Plymouth for tho purpose of visiting the exhibition of war trophies which is being held in the Coronation Hall. The children were in charge of Miss Frost (assistant mistress), and after spending an interesting and instructive hour or.so. in viewing the trophies, an adjournment was made to Kawarda Park, where a royal time was spent. The return trip was made in good time, and the youngsters arrived home well before dark, full of the day's experiences.

The returned soldiers’ ball held In the Uruti Hall on Friday evening last was In every way a most pronounced success, and the manner in which the arrangements were carried out reflect every credit on the committee and the energetic secretary, Mr. A. J. Smith. Five carloads of visitors were present from Waitara, and other portions of the district were also represented. The music as supplied by Feek’s orchestra, was in every way satisfactory, and a splendid supper was pnwlded and accorded full justice, The function is • being made ah annual re-union of returned men, and will bo looked upon as one of the most important balls held in Uruti, and l>e heartily supported by the public. Mr. Les Frazdr, who some years ago used to be a resident of Urenui, has taken up his residence in the Okoke, and will be unliking on the farm of Mr. Kennah, of that district.

The customary monthly meeting of the Ati Awa troop of Frontiersmen was held in the Urenui Library on Friday evening last, when a good attendance of members was presided over by temporary troop leader Frontiersman P. R. Spurr. One new member was elected, and several matters in 1 connection with the affairs of the Legion were discussed, Several small catches of whitebait have recently been made in the Mimi river, and, no doubt there will be a fairly plentiful supply of this delicacy in a week or so.

There was a full attendance of cadets and territorials at. the usual fortnightly drill, presided over by Sergeant-Major Bell, of New Plymouth, on Thursday and ‘Friday last. Keen interest is being evinced, and now that the new uniforms have been Issued, the appearance of the troop is quite smart.

The many friends of Mr. Ken Blundell, of the Okoke, will be pleased to hear that he is progressing favorably in New Plymouth after his recent operation.

Tho splendid acceptances received ,by the North Taranaki Hunt Club for their steeplechase meeting to be hqjd in New Plymouth on Saturday next, augurs well for the success of tho gathering, and should they be favored with flue weather, a*record turnover will probably have to be reported. The locally owned Kiko Klko, by Gravitation, has been, paid up for. .

With the approaching end of the football season, cricket is now being discussed, and the annual meeting of the Urenui C.C. is shortly to be held. Though they were not successful in winning the cup last season, still a very creditable showing was made, and no doubt this year a strong team will be placed in the field. The club will still have the assistance of J. 8. O'Neill, who has taken over the Urenui Hotel, and other good players have signified their intention of joining. With all the teams playing on Saturdays, the anatter of providing sufficient grounds will have to be' attended to, but no doubt by a combined effort on the part of all interested, the difficulty will be satisfactorily settled.

The tiling of the whey sump in the Wai-tol-rol dairy factory has now been completed, and every credit irt due to Mr. Gorton, for the excellent manner in which the work has been carried out. Tho sump has now a beautifully clean and sanitary appearance, and is sonic 12ft. long and sft. in depth. It will be fit for dse in a day or so, and its usefulness will do doubt be appreciated by the staff.
