NORTH TARANAKI HUNT. STEEPLECHASE MEETING ON SATURDAY. There should be no need to remind followers of racing of the annual steeplochr.se meetI ing of the North Taranaki Hunt, which takes 1 place on the New Plymouth racecourse on Saturday. Splendid acceptances have been received, and complete arrangements have been made by the secretary and officials to ensure the success of the gathering and the counfort of patrons. All that is now required to attract a record crowd is fine weather. Mr. J. Blewman has the course and its appointments in fine order. OWNERS AND TRAINERS. ASSOCIATION PROPOSED. A meeting of those Interested in the formation of an Owners’ and Trainers’ Association is to be held in the Soldiers' Club, New 1 Plymouth, to-morrow, at 8 p.m. A large at- 1 tendance is requested, as Mr. A. J. Shearsby, ' of Palmerston North, the Dominion organiser, will bo present and will address the meeting. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) The Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s meeting promises goiitl sport at Hawera to-day. Fields i should be large, and the class of hordes seen out fairly goqd for such a. gathering. Amongst tl:e hunters engaged Tirau, Stetson, Marshal Neil, Temaire, Tornea and Kafour appear to Stand out, while Prodigal, Halcyon, Awake and Sunny Jinx should show up in hack company.
The patronage extended to forthcoming hunt meetings Stows how anxious horse-owners are to give their horses a sharpening-iip gallop or two in public before the more serious spring, racing commences. Thus we see horses like ■Amythas, The Hawk, Rational, Maioha, Rouen, Simonides, Trespass, etc., figuring on tire nomination lists. The moral of the whole thing is that there is an opening for some minor racing clubs, which have long-wished
in the autumn when their bigger brothers (willi their bigger stakes) have overshadowed G em, to step in and accommodate the get-in-early brigade. Between July Sind the latter part of September there is only one regular race meeting (Marton) on this coast, and any
centrally-situated racing club would be certain to do better by racing in the spring.
The handicapping of Loyal Irish in the Maitland Cup, in which the Absurd colt was awarded the minimum, has caused a hig hubbub in Sydney papers, and how a horse that was considered fit to carry 7st. in the Epsom and 7.1 in ti e Metropolitan came to be so leniently treated is one of the vagaries of
handicapping. The cables were silent on Saturday regarding the Maitland Cup result, but practically all Sydney papers voted the New Zealander a "moTal."
Stetson and Murk Time will be Mr. J. B. QMstord'v sole reprageatativM lUhwa w-
day. Probably W. J. Bowden will rido the foranm-.
1 Passed out recently. Treadmill, by Bill of Portland—Catherine Wheel, winner of the Canterbury Cup, New Zealand St. Leger, Wanganui. Guineas, and other races, and sire of those good horses Autumnus, Counterfeit, Nightwatch and Browh Owl. Treadmill was bred by Sir Geo. Clifford in 1960.
A Sydney paper states that Ashley Reed intends visiting' Australia again in the spring, and will probably ride Loyal Irish In the A.J.C. Derby.
Awake will be ridden by A. Rutherford today. The Elysian gelding has won both his last starts, and is sure to be solidly supported at. Hawera.
