THE YAP PROBLEM.

AIMING AT SETTLEMENT. HOPE OF AN AGREEMENT. By Telegraph.—Pres? Assn—Copyright. Received August 30, 5.5 p.m. Washington, August 29. It is reported that the United States Government is hopeful that an agreement or a treaty may be concluded between the Allied and associated Governments prior to the convocation of the Armament Conference, whereby not only the status of Yap, but also related mandate questions, will be satisfactorily settled. It is regarded as certain that the Allies will welcome any settlement of the Yap controversy that is agreeable to the United States and Japan, though technically all the Powers must formally approve it. It is understood negotiations between America and Japan regarding Yap are progressing satisfactorily.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
