SEA-FRONT EROSION.

PROBLEM AT THE EAST END. TWO COMMITTEES AMALGAMATED. 'As a result of the erosion of the foreshore at the East 'End the committees responsible for the improvements at the beach are considerably exercised to find ways and means to either check the inroads of the sea or remove their buildings to a place of safety. With this object in view a combined meeting o. the East End Committee was held on Saturday night, when it was intended to bring about an amalgamation of the two committees. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) presided over a fairly large attendance.

A cormittee of-nine, drawn from both committees at the meeting, set up ro go further into the question, the main object for consideration being the advisability or otherwise of moving the East End pavilion across the railway line to a place of greater safety. A site that is suggested for the pavilion is on the flat land to the westward of the To Henui river, above the small bridge and below Devon Street East. No definite line of action was decided on at the meeting, but further meetings of the committee will he held, one matter for consideration being whether the pavilion will be worth removing, as to move it would entail completely pulling it down, and some doubt exists as to whether the material is of sufficient value to warrant removal.
