WIN FOR SOUTH AFRICA. NINE POINTS TO FIVE. AN EXCITING TUSSLE. By Telegraph.—Preu Association Auckland, Auguet 27. The second test match between the South Africans and New Zealand was played here this afternoon, the South Africans winning by 9 points to 5. There was glorious weather with a light breeze alopg the ground and the area was dry and fast. The attendance was estimated at 40,000. Spells of 45 minutes were played. The game was strenuous, but there were no untoward incidents, though there were several stoppages through players being winded. The game was fast and even, though lacking in concerted activities. The first spell was very even, especially among the forwards. Both backs got a fair share of the ball, but each side’s tackl:ng was deadly. A feature was the good line-kicking, the Africans being mo’e accurate. In scrum work the New Zealanders’ hooking was not as clean as that of the visitors.

The second spell was very even and exciting, the ball travelling up and down field at a great rate.! The forwards were again very even, New Zealand being superior in the loose, though the following up by New Zealand was rather weak towards the end. Of the Africans G. Morkel played a magnificent game. Meyer did good work, his defence being splendid. Zeller, on attack, and Morkel, on defence, were good in the three-quarter line. Ellis was the best forward, particularly in the loose. Of the other forwards Duplessis was good in heavy work, the forwards being an even lot in the aennn. For New Zealand Kingston was rather erratic, not being too sure in finding the line. Storey and Steel played well, and Nicholls was fairly safe in defence. Roberts played magnificently in attack, particularly in the early part of the game. Moffatt was the outstanding forward and Bellis also played well. The teams were as follows: SPRINGBOKS. New Zealand won the toss and played with the breeze against them. G. Morkel kicked off and Roberts returned to half-way. Donald gained ground by a kick. A pass followed by Roberts to Badeley to Storey, who lined five yards from th|B corner, but a line-out relieved, and G. Morkel gained 40 yards by a kick. Moffatt and Bellis broke away from a line-out and carried play to the twentyfive and McLean, Badeley and Nicholls were associated in a run, the latter dropkicking. Then Moffatt, Roberts and Storey took up the running and the latter was thrown out in the corner. Soon after Roberts kicked and was smothered by Van Rooyen, Ellis finding the line well in the twenty-five. Ellis broke away from the line-out. Play continued at half-way, and then R. Morkel started a rush to New Zealand’s twenty-five. Zeller was tackled by West and play was transferred to the visitors’ half, where Roberts and Badeley made a good run, and a forward run to the twenty-five ended by a knock-on. A series of scrums and lineouts foliowetl in New Zealand’s half, from which Van Rooyen broke away. He sent to Clarkson, to Sendin, who scored, and G. Morkel converted. South Africa 5 New Zealand 0 The game had been in progress for fifteen minutes. -On resuming Steel found the line at the twenty-five, Michau gaining ground by several kicks to the line. A rush by Roberts and Hughes was nipped at half-way. and from a scrum here H. Morkel broke away. Steel intercepting a pass and putting in a brilliant kick. From a kick across the field by Roberts Zeller fielded and carried play to the twenty-five, where, from a scrum, Michau got the ball, which went through the African backs to H. Morkel, who missed the K all.

Play then centred near half-way From a penalty G. Morkel found the line near I New Zealand’s twenty-five. Here Donald broke through and passed to Roberts, who transferred to Aitken, the latter transferring to Storey, who kicked to the twenty-five. Then Roberts secured from a fumble by the African backs and passed to Bellis, who was tackled, and McLean picking up dashed over. Nicholls converted, and the score, after 28 minutes’ play, was: New Zealand 5 South Africa 5

On resuming Donald passed to Badeley, who kicked over half-way. Steel running up knocked on and from the resulting sprum Africa set up an attack, Nicholls saving. The Africans renewed the attack, Kingston saving. Shortly afterwards Storey missed a kick and New Zealand were forced. Zeller initiated another attack in the loose, a fine line Icick by Storey saving. Play remained about half-way, when Badeley fumbled and Meyer came through, sending on to Sendin, then to H. Morkel, who was pushed out ten yards from the corner. Donald then kicked past halfway. Give and take piny followed for several minute®,, until from an interchange of kicks the Africans, by a good kick, gained ground to New Zealand’s twenty-five. Clarkson and Meyer then broke away. The latter was tackled by Badeley, and from a scramble the ball went to G, Morkel, who found the line near the twenty-five. Bellis and Moffatt broke through, Sendin saving, and play was in the African twenty-five at halftime. The score was:— New Zealand 5 South Africa v . 5

THE SECOND SPELL. On resuming Zeller made a run and was stopped by Bellis in twenty-five. A free kick to Africa relieved. Then Roberts made a good run, as a result of which play was transferred tb half-way. The Africans gradually worked up. G. Morkel was penalised, Steel’s kick from half-way bring smothered, and from a rebound Roberts kicked to past the twenty-five. Roberts, Nicholls and Badeley were associated in a run, Aitken missing. Steel later broke away, going out near the twenty-five, Clarkson then broke away, kicking to Storey, who fumbled. Clarkson followed up fast and kicked the ball over the dead line. From a loose serum Michau passed tc Meyer, who kicked to Kingston, who ran round and found touch past half-way by a fine kick. A free kick by Roberts from half way found the line within 10 yards of the Africans’ line. Then Roberts secured and th© ball travelled through New Zealand’s backs to Steel, who was tackled by H. Mo.'kol almost on the line. Zeller then ran from halfway. being tackled by Kingston right on the line, and a fine kick to half-way relieved. Play was now very exerting, the ball travelling up and down field tt a great rate. From a long kick Storey followed up near the Africans’ twentyfive, smothering Meyer with the bait From a loose serum play was carried across field to half-way and then a forward run by Africa was stopped by Kingston. Michau passed to H. Morkel, who centred in the twenty-five. A New Zealand rush, with Bellis in the lead, returned play to half-way. From a line-out Roberts passed to Badeley, who kicked to G. Morkel, who lined just past the Africans’ twenty-five. Roberta, from a line-out, found the line 15 yards from the goal line, but the visitors pushed back the attackers. Storey kicked to G. Morkel, who ran behind the goal-line to return. Michau stopped a dangerous rush right on the visitors’ line and then a penalty enabled the visitors to clear. From between half-way and the twenty-five Roberts had a pot, but the Africans forced. From th< kick-off Nicholls marked at half-way, the ball just landing in front of the posts, Meyer returning. From a long ki*k Kingston slipped after takiag the ball and Steel kicked oVer the dead ball line, resulting in a scrum five yards feom New Zealand’s goal. The ball wii kicked to G. Morkel, who, after a short run, dropped a goal. South Africa 9 New Zealand 5 Thirty minutes’ play had gone. New Zealand attacked, but from a loose scrum Michau found the line past halfway. The Africans attacked, but fumbling by the backs enabled Steel to initiate a counter-attack, H. Morkel collaring him in his own half. Roberts and Badley started a run. the latter being tackled by Meyer. Another run by Donald and Badeley and back to Donald carried play to half-way. Play continued in the Africans’ half, several pawing rushes being made by both sides, Roberta stopping Meyer by a fine tackle. Play then hovered about half-way. Then a forward rush lad by Kruger was stopped by Kingston, and play was : n neutral territory on time, the game ending:— South Africa 9 New Zealand 5
