PERSONAL.
A cable from London says that Mr. A. C. Willis, formerly a manager of the Union Bank of Australia, has been appointed a director. Lord Jellicoe’s cousin, Miss Whalley Smythe Gardiner, who recently died in England at the age of 105 years, used to read aloud to her companion and, until the time of her death, her mind was as clear as it had been in her youth. Her reminiscences of days gone by were very interesting.
Mrs. Wilkes, who has had charge of the infant department of the Vogel - town School since its inception, and who recently resigned her position, was on Thursday afternoon the recipient of a number of presentations. Mias Lily Hookham, on behalf of the pupils, presented Mrs. Wilkes with a solid leather travelling case, and in a neat little speech tendered the thanks of the boys and girls to Mrs. Wilkes for all she had done for them and expressed their good wishes for her future happiness and prosperity. Mr. V. Griffiths, chairman of the School Committee, expressed the regret of the committee and of parents generally that Mrs. Wilkes was leaving the school, and on behalf of the committee presented her with a fountain pen as a small token of esteem and of their appreciation of her services in the interests of the children. Cheers were given for Mrs. Wilkes, who feelingly responded. Later Mrs. Wilkes was the guest of the lad ies of the Vogel - town and Frankleigh Park districts at afternoon tea, and was presented by Mrs. Griffiths on their behalf with a beautiful bouquet.
