RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the committee of the Stratford Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last night. Present : Messrs. E. IT. Young (chairman), G. E. Jago, H. Summerfield, B. Horner, F. Olliver, G. A. King. F. Foley. C. A. Marchant, and N. R. Wilson (secretary). The arrangements for the proposed smoke concert and re-union were left over pending a reply from General Sir Edward Chaytor, who has been invited to attend. Three resignations were received from members. Regret was expressed that some members were now dropping out of the association, when it was necessary that it should have the co-opera-tion of all returned men. A letter was received from the general secretary of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association with reference to concessions of soldier farmers and containing the reply of the, Minister of Lands (the Hon. D. H. Guthriej to a. deputation which had placed be; fore him several points which it wished him to consider in order to help him alleviate some of the hardships at present being undergone by soldiers on the land. The Minister's letter stated that it appeared that the soldiers suffering the greatest hardships wore those engaged in sheep farming and grazing stock, and their rl'fliculties were due to the poor prices obtainable for wool and fat stock. The Government had decided that the solution of the difficulty was in the- direction of providing further financial assistance by an adjustment of mortgages, with consequent increases in accommodation, such adjustment to relate only to soldier settlers who had done sterling work in the development of their property, and who should he offered every inducement to stay on the land. Commissioners of Crown Lands had been instructed that advances may be made on the following lines: (1 i Where a soldier ettler has effected improvements of a permanent character he may apply for a transfer of a. sum not exceeding £250. or 75 per cent, of the value of the improvements (whichever is least) and execute an instalment mortgage for the sum so transferred'from his current account, such mortgage to be for a period of 364 years with an annual charge of 6 per cent., in which is included interest at 5 per cent., rebate being at th? rate of U per cent, for prompt payment of the instalment. Arrangements may be made at any time for a reduction on the principal owing. (2) Upon an adjustment being made upon the two mortgage accounts, the soldier settler would then be in a position of obtaining fur- | th er accommodation up to the maximin, allowed ou current account, and advances may be made for the following purposes: (a) Advances against whatever equity there is in the property in excess of advances, in order that the soldier may be provided with the mean? of promptly discharging his most pressing debts: (b) advances against any further improvements that may be I effected by a soldier -, (c) advances for | the purchase of additional stock if -it ' is considered that by this means the i soldier will improve his income from • the property; (d) advances against the i season’s prospective lambing, the de- i partment to be reCcuped upon receipt’ of the lamb cheque.. GENERAL. A motorist who loft his motor-car 1 with the engine running whilst ho entered a business place in Broadway prepared a rude shock for the other occupants of the car, for it started off of its own accord and had its hack wheels not caught on the edge of the gutter, would probably have done sone damage. The front wheels crossed on to the footpath, but the car was not travelling fast enough for the back wheels to proceed further.
