THE AMERICA CUP.
AUSTRALASIAN PROPOSAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— CoFFtlgtt. Received August 23, 9.40 pjn. Melbourne, August 23. The secretary of the Royal Yacht Club, discussing the New Zealand suggestion far an Australasian entry in the America Cop contest, considers it is largely impractib-> able. Even if the proposal is penaattd with, it will be impossible to enter in the 1922 race. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. A suggestion has been made by Mr T. M. Wilford, who recently returned from a tour of the United States, thM Australia and New Zealand might combine in a successful effort to wrest the America Cup, the most famous of ill yachting trophies, from the Americals. “Australia and New Zealand,” Mr. Wil. ford told a Dominion reporter, “are not known in America as they should be. and, apart from the sporting side <n the challenge, the publicity which would certainly he given to the project would undoubtedly be of the very greateat value to these countries. I cannot any insurmountable difficulties, and at least the challenge would let the Americans know where Australia and New Zealand are. I am willing to give a substantial subscription if the idea is taken up. I believe that, such a yacht as would be required to sail from New Zealand to America could be built at
Auckland, could the money be found. New Zealand could easily find p crew* for such a boat, and what a scnsationt would be caused if the hero of Jutland, Lord Jellieoe, could be persuaded ta 4
take command! I* submitted the pro* posfli to the editor of a leading newa-t paper in Los Angeles. He was very t much taken with the idea, and asked? me to put the suggestion in writing, so that, in the event of anything coining of it in New Zealand, ho could start American Press work right away.”
