SINN FEIN IN GLASGOW. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright August 23, 8.20 p.m. London, August 23. Two middle-aged men, O’Brien and Phipps, were sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment at Glasgow for conspiring to further the interests of Sinn Fein by the unlawful use of firearms. Two other Sinn Feiners were sentenced to three years for being in possession of revolvers and ammunition near Clydebank.

The original forces, British troops and police, were insufficient, and 400 men of the Leinster Regiment and more armed police are en route. BUILDERS REFUSE LOWER WAGES. Capetown, August 22. The Board of Building Trade Employees, representing nil unions concerned in the building industry in South Africa, replied to the masters’ notice of reductions of wages on September 16 by instructing all centres to accept a notice of lock-out on that date. The masters proposed reductions of 5d to 6d an hour. Nine thousand men. are affected. BRITISH VITAL STATISTICS. London, August 22. The latest returns for England and Wales show the highest marriage rate for any first quarter and the lowest death rate for any second quarter 1 . The marriages were 13,672 above the previous year, the percentage being 16.5 per 1000, and the latter 11.5 per 1000. The infant mortality was 20 per cent, below the average mortality. A feature of the births is that the number of males is more pronounced than formerly. (In New Zealand the marriage rate in 1919 was 8.38 per 1000.)
