THE MEAT TRADE.
COMPETITION WITH ARGENTINE. COMPLAINT BY QUEENSLAND. By Tel^jraph.-—Press Assn —Copyright. Received August 21, 5.5 pin. I London, August 19. Mr. J. M. Hunter (Agent-General for Queensland), intervewed by a meat trade journal, said the present serious condition of the beef trade must be ended or mended quickly; it was impossible for the industry to stand the present losses. The preference which the trade and the consuming public were showing for Argentine beef reflects no credit on their health or heads. Prior to the war, Argentine and Queensland beef sold at the same price, and now Queensland was threepence a pound below Argentine, the only apparent reason being that Australia was self-sacrificing enough to allow her army to have meat during the war. Here there was no complaint regarding the quality of Queensland meat, which was subject to the same rigid Government inspection. Australia gives British goods preference of 12 1 per cent., and it was entitled at least to equality of treatment with foreign traders.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
