BORDEN SHIELD MATCH, -./ TARANAKI (4) v. WANGANUI (4), The Taranaki hockey team successfully defended the Norden Cup against the first challenger, Wanganui, ar. Kaponga, on Saturday, after a lard and exciting game, which ended in a <lraw, each side scoring 4 goals. The weather was fine. Wanganui , won the toss and played with the wind In their favor. Wanganui at once set up a fast attack, and hard play took place within a few yards of Taranaki's goal, where Binnie saved in good style. After an interchange of hits Wanganui were again attacking in Taranaki’s territory, but Thoumine saved. Taranaki forwards attacked, and Binnie’s shot at goal missed. After hard play Binnie again got within striking distance and shot a good goal. Play became fast, and by good combined play Simmons hit a good goal for Wanganui, equalising tte scores. Wanganui again attacked, and Simmons, by a clever piece of play, hit his second goal. Both sides were forced in quick succession. Hendrickson’s shot at goal missed through being over eager. Binnie started a good rush right up the field, but Wanganui's defence was too solid. Wanganui attacked hard in front of Taranaki’s goal, but T. Binnie saved in flno style. Hawkins, Blundell and Masters start cd a good passing rush up the field, and Taranaki forced. Wanganui again attacked with considerable force, and Webb shot a goal, making Wanganui 3 and Taranaki 1. Taranaki returned with a good rush, and Priest, by good following up, shot Taranaki's second goal. Nicholls and Binnie started a rush from which Binuie scored, and the first spell ended Taranaki 3 .Wanganui 3 On resuming Taranaki attacked, but hit too hard. Wanganui’s combination proved too good for Taranaki, and after carrying the ball to within striking distance Hawkins hit a clever goal. Taranaki showed that they were in good form by making the play fast. They had. several ineffective hits at goal, but soon after Pennington, by following up fast, scored amid great excitement, making the score 4 all. Wanganui made strenuous efforts to break through their opponents’ defence, but NlchoHs saved in time. Henricksen was Injured at this stage and was carried off. With only four minutes to go Taranaki played with ten imen, and they were attacking when time was called with the score:— Taranaki 4 Wanganui. 4 Messrs. Fisher and J. Davison refereed. At the conclusion of the Wanganui-Taranaki match, Eltham thirds played Kaponga thirds for a dinner. The match resulted in a draw, each side scoring a try. McDonald scored for Kaponga and Page for Eltham.
INTER-PROVINCIAL MATCHES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. Auckland defeated Hawke’s Bay yesterday by three goals to nil. Wellington, Last Night. Wellington (5) beat Manawatu (3). SOUTHLAND v. WAIRARAPA. Invercargill, August 20. In the ladles’ hockey match Southland defeated Wairarapa by six goals to one. The weather was perfect, but tho ground was heavy. The game was fast. Southland outshone the visitors in all departments, their . combined work being a feature. Tho visitors lacked combination, but Miss Tully effected some fine saves. TARANAKI LADIES’ TEAM. The following team has been chosen to represent Taranaki at the ladies’ hockey tournament, which is to be held in Palmerston North in September: Forwards, Misses Curtis (left wing), Ki veil, Reid (inside left). Stone, Henricksen (centres), Death, Ward (inside rights), Knapman (right wing) ; halves. Misses Henry (left), Boon, Peterson (centre), Busson (right) ; backs. Misses Nutting (left), Thomson (right) ; goal. Miss Hale.
