THE MELANESIAN MISSION.

A financial crisis has arisen in connection with the Melanesian Mission, insomuch that it will be impossible to send the “Southern Cross” away on her next trip unless a large sum of money can be raised before September 15. The 1 matter was discussed at a recent meet- * ing of the Bishops, who were deeply impressed with the seriousness of the’position, and requested the Board of Missions to take immediate steps to avert what would be an appalling disaster to the Mission and a disgrace to the church. The board is therefore appealing for a sum of at least £5OOO from the Anglicans in New Zealand, and towards this it is hoped that New Plymouth, which contains many, ardent friends of the Mission, will contribute substantially. Donations will be gladly received by the. vicar. The causes of the present crisis arer | (1) The high prices of stores during and i since the war; (2) extensive repairs to the mission ship, the “Southern Cross”; I and (3) the great financial loss (nearly £1000) incurred by the calamitous outbreak of influenza on the autumn voyage of 1920, necessitating an additional trip by/fhe boat.
