NEARING THE FINAL. JAPAN VERSUS INDIA. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, Received August 19, 11.25 p.m. New York, August 18. The Davis Cup match between. Japan and India opened to-day. The first two singles were played, the games resulting: Kumegae (Japan) defeated Sleem (India), 9—7, 6—l, 6—l. Shimidzu (Japan) defeated Fyhee (India), 6—l, 9—7. Both the Indians, who are native born, had slow services, and lobbed too frequently. They were, therefore, much at the mercy of the Japanese, who played their usual swift and slashing game, placing with accuracy and precision.
[The Davis Cup contest is now approaching the final stage. Australasia, having come through without defeat, awaits the victor in the match between Japan and India, and the result of the first day’s play suggests Japan. In that case Australasia will meet Japan and the winners will play the United States (the holders of the cup) in the challenge round.] WORLD’S WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. Received August 19, 9.5 p.m. Washington, August 18. It is announced at Forest Hills that, lieginning this summer, the world’s women’s tennis championship will be decided annually in the United States, find the Westside Tennis Club has offered a cup emblematic and perpetual of the world’s title. The first match will probably be between Mlle. Suzanne Lenglen and the winner of the present tournament, which is likely to be Mrs. Mallory.
