“SPRIT” AS A SPY.

MESSAGES DURING THE WAR. FOUND TO BE USELESS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, August 18. “Scrutator” in Truth writes: I have investigated the strange current story that spirit messages from Lord Kitchener helped to win the war. It appears that the wife of a British officer states that during 1918 her son, who had been killed in action, demanded a pencil and commenced a series of weekly letters in automatic writing for months. They purported to emanate from Lord Kitchener, gave information regarding the disposition of the German lines, and requested that they should be sent to Sir Douglas Haig. An officer friend showed the letters to two brigadier-generals, who took them to headquarters, where Sir Douglas Haig agreed to examine the communications. They proved quite useless, Sir Douglas stating that it was certain that such rubbish never emanated from Lord Kitchener, even if it came from the spirit world. Truth is convinced that the recipient of the supposed messages acted in perfect good faith.
