SHIPYARD STRIKE OVER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —CopyrTgftt. Received August 18, 8.10 p.m. London, August 17. The shipyard joiners have accepted an immediate weekly cut of six shillings, and a further three shillings in October and December. A further reduction of three shillings is being considered. The employers originally demanded a reduction of twelve shillings. Work will be resumed next week. PROTECTION OF INDUSTRIES. Received August 18, 8.10 p.m. London, August 17. The House of Lords carried the third reading of the Safeguarding Industries Bill, after adopting, by 39 votes to 33, an amendment limiting the duration of any order under the dumping sections to two years. The Government strongly opposed the amendment, which, however, is of little practical importance in view of the Speaker’s declaration that it is a money Bill, and therefore alterations by the House of Lords are ultra vires.—Aus.-N.Z. A Helsingfors telegram states that the Russian Government has dispatched representatives to Italy to buy aeroplanes for the Soviet.—Reuter Service. SOVIET LOSING POWER. Received August 18, 8.10 p.m. Petrograd, August 16. The Central Soviet has abolished, the prohibition decree and permits the manufacture and sale of wine. The nationalisation of houses in Petrograd is also abandoned. RUSSIA SNUBS THE LEAGUE. Received August 18, 10.55 p.m. London. August 18. x A message from Warsaw states that unconcealed contempt was displayed in the Vilna Assembly’s reception of the League of Nation’s request for the transformation of Zeligowski’s army into a militia not exceeding five thousand in number and for the dismissal of outsiders from civil and military posts. On the other h.ind the Assembly thanked Zeligowski for delivering the city and adopted a resolution declaring hie army the city’s sole defence, as the League of Nations was unable to guarantee, security.—Times Service. AMERICA AND ARMAMENTS. Received August 18, 10. 20 p.m. Washington, August 17. Senator Lodge severely criticised the reductions in the army and navy appropriations by Congress and declared he would earnestly work for a reduction of armaments, but he would insist on a general reduction by all nations. BITTER FEELING IN INDIA. Delhi, August 17. The Lahore municipality declined to welcome the Prince of Wales until the wrongs committed in- the province in the martial law days are righted. EARTHQUAKE IN ITALY. Rome, August 16. A severe earthquake occurred at Grithrea. A number of buildings collapsed and a number were killed and injured. CLAIM FOR WARw SUFFERINGS. London, August 16. A Royal Commission, headed by Lord Sumner, has been appointed to consider British national and moral claims for compensation for sufferings and damage arising out of the enemy’s actions, and to recommend a basis of distribution among such of £5,000,000 from the first reparation payment that Britain receives. —Aus.-N.Z.
