THE CANTEEN FUNDS.
DISPOSAL OF THE INTEREST. NAVAL SCHEME OPPOSED. By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to-night, spirited discussion took place regarding the proposal made to the Canteen Funds Disposal Board that the first five years’ interest on the canteen funds, which now amounts to £116,000, should be devoted to naval defence and propaganda. Strong opposition was shown to the proposal, which it was said was engineered by a small clique. It was also alleged that a section was endeavoring to use the association for political purposes. Eventually, on the motion of ex-Cap-tain Sievwright, seconded by ex-Colo-nel T. G. Hall, it was. decided: “That while reaffirming its loyalty and appreciating the necessity for a strong navy, the association regrets it was not consulted before the expenditure of the interest on the canteen funds was decided on, and recommends that the funds be devoted wholly to the relief of disabled soldiers and their dependents.”
