Orders for papers may also be left with them. BOROUGH COUNCIL; August Id. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Cbunci! was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), and Crs. Cameron, Ward, Jackson, -Stewart, Mclnnes, Lawson. Hunter, Walsh and Rutherford. The following remits for the Municipal Conference were adopted:—(l) That the Government be asked to instruct all Government Departments paying money to any local authority to obtain such local authority’s official receipt ~for same, (2) That section 40, paragraph “h,” He amended by omitting the following words:—“lf the payment made or to be made by or on behalf 6P”t'he council in respect of any such contract exceeds five pounds in the case of a single contract, or ten pounds altqgether in any financial year in the case of two or more contracts.” (3) 'That a local authority not having already established a superannuation fund under the Local Authorities Superannuation Act, 1908, upon being required so to do by a requisition in writing signed by ail or any b-f its employees, shall apply to the sup- ! erintendent of the National Provident I Fund to become "a contributor to that fund on behalf of all or any of the persons in the service of such local authority, and that The National Provident Fund Amendment Act. 1914. be further amended so as to make it compulsory upon all local authorities therein named, in all cases where any of such local -authorities are respectively required so as to do by all or any of their employees, to take all necessary stpps to he. comq contributors to the said fund on behalf of all or any of their employees, as the case may he, in accordance with the provisions of the said Act. The Mayor stated that nothing had been done in the matter of improving the Domain because of the question of finance. He was going to call a meeting of those, interested, in a few days, with a view to improving the Domain.
Correspondence was- received relating to the matter of the council’s alley-way between the council building and Mr. R. D. Lewers’ drapery shop. An agree- ‘ ment had some time ago been, effected ! between the council and Mr. Lewers, by ; which Mr. Lewers was permitted to at- j tach the top storey of his building to ! the wall of the council building on condi- ’ tion that the council had the use of the right-of-way underneath Lowers’ build-; ing. The time stipulated in this agree- ; ment had now elapsed, and Mr. Lewers > wrote asking the council to agree to • his building a lower storo.V to his shop. ; and wished the council to suggest a snm ! which should be paid as compensation for the loss of the right-of-way. It was decided to refer the matter to a special committee, with power to act in consultation with the council’s solicitor.
