SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAY.
A HEAVY DEFICIT. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyrigtt. Capetown, August 15. A circular issued by the railway administration states that the deficit in the first quarter of the financial year was £600,000. making the accumulated deficit over £3,000,000. The Governinent proposes to introduce short time in preference to general retrenchment; also to revert to longer hours in the case of certain grades, where the work is not of an intensive character. It invites the union’s delegates to discuss the position with the Minister.
