THE HIGH SCHOOLS.

MEETING OF GOVERNORS. The monthly meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools Board of Governors was held last night. Present; Messrs. J. S. Fox (chairman), A. E. Washer, F. W. Atkinson, H. Trimble, L. C. Sladden and E. P. Webster. Mr. Washer reported that he had induced several boys at the school to epter in the root crop competitions in the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs during the coming season. Mr. Atkinson had donated £1 Is as a first prize, and he (Mr. Washer) had donated 10s as second prize.

The principal of the girls’ school reported that the roll number in the secondary department was 147; two pupils had left during the term and one had entered the school. The preparatory roll number was 41. The teachers’ room had been furnished, and was now occupied by the staff, and had proved a great acquisition. The farm committee reported that a great improvement had been achieved in the grounds at the boys’ school and also at the girls’ boarding house.

A letter was received from Mr. Dobson, the newly appointed music master at the boys’ school, stating that he would be taking up his duties at the opening of the third term on September 12. Notification was received from the department that Miss J. M. Smith had been granted 12 months’ leave of absence in Order to permit of her receiving experience in teaching in England. The chairman’s action in authorising a partition to be placed in the boys’ sickroom was confirmed. It was reported that Air. R. H. Rockell, after two mOnths’ sick leave, and Mr. F. J. Eggleton, after three months’ sick leave, had returned to their duties at the boys’ school. A resolution of sympathy with Mr. J. O’Neill in the loss of his son was carried.
