The Marlborough Express report, of the lecture Included the following:—The speaker referred first of all to the alleged spirit of Rugby, but he did not believe there was any spirit in the game, for the spirit of the game was in the rules, and if the game were played according to this spirit a good match would result. In passing, he referred briefly to the history of Rugby football with its origin in the playing fields of the great English public s hools and then its inception in New Zealand. Mr. McKenzie stated that he played football in 1880, and commenced to referee in 1886. Speaking of the conservafiveness of tie New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association, he stated that during its existent**, it had only had two presidents . and |hvo secretaries. Conservativeness, he considered, was an excellent feature in tho association, for too many changes of officers brought changes of thought and numerous reforms in the rules. Before commencing to traverse the laws. Mr. McKenzie expressed ’his appreciation of the action of Che authorities here in desiring to educate their players by inviting tim (o lecture. The speaker went on to deal with tho rules In a masterly style, and the facility with which he interpreted the most difficult, points made the lecture absorbingly interesting.
