DIVISION OF SILESIA.
PROBLEM NOT SOLVED. GOES TO LEAGUE OF NATIONS TO MAKE SUGGESTIONS. By: Telegraph.—Press Assn.—-Copyright. Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. Paris, August 12. The Supreme Council has referred the problem of Upper Silesia to the League of Nations. Under the Versailles Treaty the fixation of frontiers rests with the Allies, and in order not to injure the treaty’s working the Supreme Council’s resolution relating to Upper Silesia expressly makes it clear that the Council is only inviting the League to make recommendations; there is no question of the League acting as arbithe decision remaining with the Council. The newspaper Liberte says the Council’s decision means avoiding trouble, but it is not a settlement of the thorniest international question. Le Temps states: One could understand referring the subject to United States’ arbitration, but not to the League of Nations, to which America does not belong. Cabinet heard M. Briancl in regard to remitting the Silesian problem to the League of Nations and approved this! action. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. Berlin, August 13. The Supreme Council’s compromise has caused excitement. It is regarded as an indication of the success of the French policy of procrastination. It is stated that Germany will demand sending reinforcements in order to prevent a Polish insurgent outbreak.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
