BOXING.
English and European lightweight boxers must be a poor class these days. An English sporting paper of recent date says
"Ernie Rice, Lonsdale lightweight belt-holder and European light-weight champion, has engaged in nine contests since his first bout at the weight, on September 6 last. He has won them all, and won them either by a knock-out or on the retirement of his opponents. Georges Papin lasted longest of any of his opponents, and the Frenchman did not travel 10 rounds. Pretty good form this; convincing even—at least on paper. Truth, however, compels us to state that the critics are far from satisfied with him. They aren’t even pleased. On the contrary, practically every opinion to which we have listened has been condemnatory. Yet Rice stands out today as the best proved light-weight in England, and for all practical purposes as the best In Europe."
