DOCTOR'S DOUBLE LIFE.
One of the most interesting murder trials in recent years has been concluded at the Chicago Law Courts with a verdict of not guilty against Mrs. Lilian Rowland, charged with shooting her husband, a wealthy surgeon. In her evidence Mrs. Rowland said: “The doctor was a railway signaller at first. Then he became an engineer. But what he wanted most was to be a surgeon. I worked as a waitress to earn his tuiton at a university. Success came to j him, and then I noticed a difference. 1 j One night he found me up at 10 o'clock | i darning his socks. I could not get out j of the habit of doing these things for ' I him, although he had about £2OOO a ; I year. He said’- 'You and I are not for 4 each other now. I want you to get a ' divorce.’ f told him flatly J wouldn t ■ [ consider such a thing. The night of the rl pkpgUgg ha .doiag
work. There was a scene. He struck me. Suddenly I found inyself with a revolver in my hand. 1 1 had taken it from my husband’s drawer. The doctor was calm after he had been shot. Neither of us thought it was a serious wound. He died a few minutes later.” Evidence of the husband’s double life with “another woman” was also given. The verdict of the jury is stated to leave the widow’s right to the doctor’s fortune, estimated at £12,000, unquestionable.
