COURSING.

TARANAKI CUP MEETING. SOME GOOD SPORT. VISITING DOGS PROMINENT. The New Plymouth Coursing Club’s Taranaki Cup meeting, which opened at the Glenavon enclosure, New Plymouth, yesterday, promises to be the most successful the club has ever held. White the entries were not as numerous as might have been expected from the liberal prize money offered —the presence of so many visiting dogs probably prevented local dogs from being freely entered—it Was the presence of these outside dogs that added to the interest of the gathering, and also accounted for the excellence of the sport.

Dogs were present from Australia, Dunedin, Blenheim, Auckland, Hamilton, Marton. Wanganui. Opunake and New Plymouth, and some fine runs were witnessed. The hares, in the majority of cases, were strong runners and cleverly out-witted the dogs, though there were several kills during the afternoon, the dogs showing great pace. The opening bout between the locallyowned Dimples and Viola Lass gave an indication of the sport in store, the former winning by a comfortable margin after numerous turns and wrenches. Brindle Lady also beat Molly’s Own by a very narrow margin. Probably one of the best courses of the day was that in which Mr. Hannon’s Pretty Mickey beat the Opunake dog Shillelagh by the narrow margin of half a point, after a course in which the former led to the hare and then each dog showed cleverness, gaining points for wrenches and turns, the issue being in doubt to the kill. The Australian dog, Pegotty, had no difficulty in defeating Alma Foy, whilst the Australian Achieved’s Beauty was easily defeated by Mr. Hannon’s Some Hope. Tn .the second round pace was responsible for most of the wins. Probably the best “go” of the day was that between Drew’s Hope and Guardsman. The former took the lead and turned the hare. Then eh ch got in some wrenches and turns and finished up with a score of points each, jiecessitating another run, which Drew’s Hope won comfortably. Pegotty and Happy-Go-Lucky had no difficulty in winning their heats.

The arrangements made for the meeting reflect great credit on the officials, and should further assist to popularise the sport. The enclosure has been lengthened, whilst the convenience of the spectators has also been studied. The seating accommodation provided on the hillside was much appreciated, as was also the prompt manner in which the events were got off and the expedition with which the results were announced. The committee had worked hard to ensure success and thoroughly deserved it. Mr. R. Barlow, as president, and Mr. P. Stainton (chairman of committee) looked after the comfort of the visitors, who included Messrs. Foy (Australia), Coombes (of the Sydney Referee), Fraser Smith (president of the Waikato Club), Brown (Dunedin), and Hannon (Matiere). Mr. F. Doughty as secretary, had complete arrangements made, and in addition made a splendid slipper, Messrs. C. Haskell and C. Allen getting the hares away well, whilst Mr. W. Haskell was slip steward. Mr. A. •McGiven occupied the judge’s stand, and his decisions generally found favor. Mr. 'G. Malam acted as judge’s steward, whilst Mr. F. Barriball was call steward. Mr. R.
