INGLEWOOD.

BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

August 11. At the meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday night, the Mayor (Mr. J. R. .Sutherland) presided. Mr. A. Butler’s request for alteration in his water supply was granted, subject to supervision by the overseer. It was resolved that the Government be notified that the council prefers to leave the administration of the Explosives Act to the department, and not to attempt to carry it out on its own account.

The council resolved to replj' to communications from the Taranaki Progress League that it cannot contribute to the funds of the Power Board as requested.

The reports of the works and electric light committees were adopted. The public hall committee reported on certain repairs needed, the carrying out of which was duly authorised.

A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. W. E. Percival, and condolence with them in their bereavement, was carried, councillors standing. The Mayor, in moving the resolution, spoke very feelingly with reference to the deceased gentleman, who, he said, had been, in every way, a valuable and always' reliable citizen, one who never failed to do his share of the duties of citizenship, and to fulfil them faithfully and to the best of his ability, a good staunch friend to many of his fellow citizens, the enemy of none. As a burgess of Inglewood he had served the borough in its highest office as Mayor in 1905-G and 1906-7, the duties of which position he had faithfully performed to the advantage of the town. Inglewood, in fact Taranaki generally, had suffered a severe loss by his decease. On the motion of Crs. Spurdie and Gamlin, a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Sutherland for the handsome wreath she had made, which formed the council’s floral tributes to the funeral of the late Mr. Percival. It was resolved that James Welham be re-engaged as ranger for a further term of three months. •

The completion of the work on the railway reserve was left in the hands of .the Mayor and Or. D. E, Egarr.

DOMAIN BOARD. The Inglewood Domain Board met on Wednesday. Mr. W. H. Eagar reported that he had arranged for a supply of 200 hinau fencing posts at £lO 10s per 100, 20 straining posts at 5s each, with £1 for cartage.—His action was confirmed. In compliance with a request from Sergeaait-Major N. C. Shepherd, of the Defence Department, the use of the hill, near the football grounds for a stop butt, for the shooting of their musketry courses by the territorials and senior cadets was granted, when the football ground is not otherwise occupied, all responsibility to rest with the Department. It was resolved to grant the applications of the Inglewood Beautifying Society in regard to the carrying out of Mr. W. W. Smith’s recommendations as to improving the sports ground. The fence desired to be erected by the board.
